1st Sunday of Lent | Jesus meets Judas and Veronica

This Lent, poetry and painting are joining forces to help us pray the Way of the Cross. Each Sunday, we'll share the Way of the Cross poetically written by Sister Verónica Benedito ASM, which will be given color and depth by the artistic eye of Sister Sandra Bartolomeu, SNSF. This is the first of many collaborations between the two congregations.

«Who are you looking for?». I'm looking for your face, Jesus: the face that shows me the Father, the mouth that speaks of the Kingdom, the gaze that tells me who I am. I find you on the Mount of Olives, betrayed with a kiss by your friend. I see a face rejected, but not failed; suffering, but not robbed. Can a thief plunder a life offered? Those who offer themselves only accumulate miles: the voice travels, almost obsessively, to reach those who have missed their flight, the most rebellious sheep, the saddest, Judas, any passenger whatever their condition. Love is patient: while the crowd is smoking, it doesn't consider anyone who still wants to be found to be irretrievably lost.
I'm looking for you, Jesus, and I find you on the road to Calvary, comforted by the woman who wipes your face in the midst of the soldiers and the crowd. I recognize in her courage a kind love, not at all envious. She doesn't show off and doesn't do anything unseemly: she simply loves very much. What could be more convenient? Did she hear you when you asked the Pharisees: «Is it permitted on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save a life or to kill it?». That woman was allowed to do good, to console you while your body passed and collapsed under the weight of the cross. She was allowed a holy inconvenience: to do what was within her power at that moment in order to love you more.
I seek your face, Jesus. In it I see those who comfort you and those who betray you, the brave and the frightened, the lost and the found, those who go forward and those who look back. None are hidden from you. None are definitively lost, just as none are guaranteed to be found. I rejoice because I have a place in you. Grant me the grace to let myself be found by you and to do my utmost here and now to love you and to love your image in my brothers and sisters.
