Fourth Sunday of Lent: Jesus meets Simon of Cyrene and those who crucified him

«I do not say up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven». The Roman soldiers dressed you in purple and crowned you with thorns. You were a stranger to them: they knew nothing of your name. To you, however, they were brothers: you knew who they were, where they came from, where they were going. They felt entitled to mock you and slap you. You, on the other hand, remained offered so that they could feel God's caress on their tired faces. The soldiers put the cross on your shoulders, so much firmer than your wounded and exhausted body. Your strength was running out. They then grabbed a man who was passing by - Simon - and made him carry the tree. He carried your weight and you didn't refuse. Two by two, like lambs in the midst of wolves, without a bag or saddlebag. The cross united him to you. Suffering forever linked two people who, at that very moment, were passing by: a frail man in need of support and a generous man offered to bear the weight of the world.

When they reached the place of the Skull, they nailed your hands and feet to the cross: «Father, forgive them for they know not what they do». Before those who crucified you, your mouth spoke out of the abundance of your heart. Love forgives everything, redeems everything.

Lord Jesus, who taught your disciples to forgive by making them contemplate your forgiveness, grant me the grace to contemplate your mercy in depth so that I can learn to forgive as you do.
