Jubilee of the World of Volunteering

Sr. Ana Felício

On the first Sunday of Lent of this Holy Year 2025, the concluding Mass of the World Volunteer Jubilee was celebrated in St. Peter's Square in Rome. It was the fifth major jubilee event, this time dedicated especially to volunteers, non-profit associations and NGOs around the world.

The celebration of this Jubilee at the beginning of Lent gives us a glimpse of the spirit in which Jesus journeys towards his Paschal Mystery: Jesus offers his life as a gift, freely and out of love, right up to the Cross. Those who volunteer to offer their lives for others do so like Jesus, who did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life (cf. Mt 20:28).

In the message that Pope Francis prepared for this Sunday's Angelus, he wrote: "Volunteering is a prophecy and a sign of hope, because it bears witness to the primacy of gratuitousness, solidarity and service."

This jubilee event was also marked by the absence of the Holy Father, who has been in hospital for a few weeks. We continue to be united in prayer and offering for him during this period of illness and increased suffering.
