You know, Reader

June 21, 2021

Explain to me, Daniel, how you see a magnolia tree growing.

Sometimes we need someone who is “on the same page as us” to talk to us, face to face, over and over again, about the meaning of things we don't understand. In this life, made up of mysteries, poetry is our favorite language for doing so. Let us allow it to spread roots in us that are capable of sprouting and bearing flowers and fruit in God.

You know, reader, that we're both on the same page
And I take advantage of the fact that you've just arrived
To explain how I see a magnolia tree growing.
The magnolia tree grows in the ground you walk on - you might think
I don't need to tell you something, but I could have, believe me,
The magnolia tree grows like a book in your hands. Or rather,
That the magnolia tree - and this is the truth - always grows
Despite us.
This root for the word she threw into the poem
It could well mean that in the branch on that side
The flower that opens is already a little bit of you, and the flower I'm holding out to you,
Even if you refuse
I will never be able to meet her, no matter how much I love her,
I'll harvest it.

The magnolia stretches its shadow over my writing
And I touch the shade of the magnolia tree as if I were holding your hand.
